Decorating Mistakes that Make Designers Cringe
At Patrice Nichole Studio, we believe that thoughtful, intentional design is key to creating spaces that feel both functional and beautiful. Recently, I had the pleasure of contributing to an article by The Spruce that dives into some of the most common decorating mistakes that make designers cringe. From poorly scaled furniture to art that lacks soul, these errors can dramatically affect the overall look and feel of a room.
Here are a few points I discussed:
1. Furniture That’s Scaled Wrong for the Space
One of the most jarring mistakes I see is furniture that’s not the right size for the room. Whether it’s too large, making the space feel cramped, or too small, leaving it looking sparse and unfinished, furniture should fit the room like a glove. Properly scaled pieces bring balance and harmony, while the wrong size creates visual discomfort.
2. Cheap Drapery
Drapery can make or break a space. Cheap, ill-fitted draperies—especially those that don’t cover the window properly or hang too short from the floor—instantly detract from the elegance of a room. Investing in quality window treatments ensures not only better functionality but also a polished, cohesive look.
3. Cluttered Open Shelving
Open shelving can add a chic touch to any room, but it requires a delicate balance. Overcrowding shelves with small knick-knacks creates chaos, making the space feel cluttered. Thoughtfully curated displays elevate open shelving into a visual focal point rather than a source of distraction.
4. Art Without a Story
While art can transform a room, it’s not just about selecting bold, colorful pieces. For me, the true value of art lies in the connection it creates with the space and its inhabitants. Whether it’s abstract or traditional, the best art tells a story or has a personal meaning, making it more than just decoration but a reflection of the room’s soul.
